FC Judd was one of the pioneers of British electronic music. In Practical Electronica filmmaker Ian Helliwell explores Judd’s sound experiments into the worlds of musique concrete and electronics during the 50s, 60s and 70s. A fitting tribute to Judd himself, the experimental documentary uses rare archive footage, cinefilm, animation and collage and is accompanied by an innovative soundtrack created by Helliwell using reel to reel tape loops and self built tone generators. Often an overlooked figure, the documentary aims to fill in a lost chapter of electronic music history. The film will also be accompanied by a selection of Ian Helliwell’s short films.

We are delighted to welcome Ian Helliwell to Summerhall for a Q&A after the event, which will be hosted by broadcaster John Cavanagh.
