Making a Scene: The Anatomy of Theatre Design
A symposium for performance design practitioners, their collaborators and students of all design for performance related disciplines in association with the Society of British Theatre Designers and Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
How and where will we be making work in the future? Will it be in a nation, a region or a country or as global flâneurs? Who will our collaborators be ? Makers, hackers, scientists, gamblers, astronomers, engineers, physicists? Are we on the brink of a new enlightenment or are we working out how to survive the end of the world as we know it?
Join us in the Anatomy Lecture Theatre at Summerhall to dissect these and many other questions with our panel of speakers, Becky Minto, Kate Nelson and Stewart Laing. Following this a special Burns reception with entertainment.
Tony Award-winning stage director-designer Stewart Laing is also the Artistic Director of Untitled Projects who are responsible for extraordinary work like ‘The Salon Project’. His work has been described by the New York Times as “ingenious” and “technically astonishing”.
Kate Nelson is the Artistic Director of Nutshell, an independent theatre collective, which champions the work of female theatre practitioners in Scotland. She has directed work at the Traverse, The Citizens, Oran Mor and Pitlochry Festival Theatre. Kate also teaches Drama and Theatre Arts at Queen Margaret University.
Becky Minto has worked as a set and costume designer for companies including National Theatre Scotland, The Royal Lyceum, Grid Iron, Visible Fictions, Scottish Dance Theatre, Walk The Plank, Iron-Oxide, Lung Ha’s and Vanishing Point. She has designed a wide range of productions for main-house shows and mid-large scale touring, as well as aerial, site-specific and large outdoor spectacles. She teaches on the Performance Costume Degree course and Edinburgh College of Art.
