The ghosts in ‘Apparition’ are pared down to their most basic representation. Karin Gunnarsson is interested in how psychological processes can be translated into surface. She finds suitable scenarios and images, to work with, in dreams, myth and fantasy. In the studio, she recreates these findings into objects and installations. Through this process, she studies and records their formal qualities and constructs minimal narratives that are most often presented in photographic and moving image works. The narratives in ‘Apparition’ play with the ghost’s liminal nature; a threshold between the visible and the invisible.

For this new site specific installation the artist has included images of ghostly animals, as well as her more usual humanoid phantoms, having taken stock of Summerhall’s past as a major veterinary teaching college and hospital.

Karin Gunnarsson is a Swedish artist who is based in Tokyo, Japan. She lived in London for many years where she completed her MA studies in Photography at the Royal College of Art in 2009.
