Harry Papadopoulos captured the post-punk waterfront; a time when Scotland was at the epicentre of the independent music boom. This selection of images is taken from the Street Level Photoworks exhibition entitled ‘What Presence: the Rock Photography of Harry Papadopoulos’ co-curated with Ken McCluskey. The images are from the period 1979-1984 when he was a staff photographer for the essential music weekly of the period, ‘Sounds’, providing countless front covers.

The exhibition includes Edwyn Collins and Orange Juice, The Dreamboys (featuring frontman Peter Capaldi – decades before his screen roles as Malcolm Tucker and Dr Who, with US late-night chat show host, Craig Ferguson on drums), The Laughing Apple (featuring Alan McGee who set up Creation Records), Claire Grogan of Altered Images, Aztec Camera, and Edinburgh luminaries Davy Henderson (the Fire Engines, and now of The Sexual Objects, Nectarine No.9, Win), Josef K and The Scars. Also on show are images of British and US punk acts – both pre and post punk – such as Gil Scott-Heron, The Clash, The Specials, and Julian Cope.
