In 2002, a 16-year-old boy was brutally murdered in the village of Potzlow, north of Berlin. The media quickly dismissed the crime as the consequence of right-wing extremism and socio-economic deprivation in the area, but director Andres Veiel wanted to find out more. The Kick uses official reports and personal interviews to open a more nuanced perspective on the event. Unflinching and unflinchingly human, Veiel’s film confronts us with uncomfortable truths that relate to us all.

Andres Veiel was born in 1959 in Stuttgart and is one of the most important directors working in Germany today. The Kick is being shown at Summerhall together with two other films by Veiel as part of a project led by Dora Osborne, Leverhulme Early Career Fellow at the University of Edinburgh and generously supported by the Goethe Institut. We are delighted to welcome the director to a Q&A after the film. This will be followed by a small reception hosted by the German Consulate General Edinburgh.
