Part of the ‘Philosophy in the Playground’ series.

This session will be led by Dr Tillmann Vierkant.

Can women be good scientists? Most people would say that this is a stupid question, obviously yes! Interestingly though, often the very same people will find it difficult to connect the concept ‘woman’ and ‘scientist’ in a reaction time task. This phenomenon is called Implicit Bias and it is only one example of many that our unconscious processing is often very much not in line with our conscious mind. But if that is the case, then the question arises: Who is in control, me or my unconscious, and does it make sense at all to separate the two?
