Model Explorations

Edinburgh School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture’s (ESALA)
Sat 19 Dec 2015   -  Fri 08 Jan 2016
_ Venue: null

This exhibition features selected physical models from the Edinburgh School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture’s (ESALA) third year design course, Architectural Design 3: Explorations. The course is structured as a series of five units with independent investigative themes, with a shared interest in exploring design methodology. Physical models play distinctive roles in each unit, from being a form-finding mechanism for structural systems (Sacred Form), to being a speculative device for urban interventions (Game of Rivals), to testing full-scale physical fabrication techniques (Prototyping Realities), to simulating environmental exchanges at scale (Re-tooling Cockenzie Power Station), to honing relationships between building components across territorial, building, and bodily scales (On the Klein Studio). While models are used towards different ends in each unit, they share a common role as speculative, iterative devices for conceiving of spatial interventions in the built environment.
