John Kindness’ The Odyssey: Artist Talk

Summerhall is extending award-winning Northern Irish artist John Kindness’ exhibition, The Odyssey, until June 30th 2023. The re-launch will be accompanied by an Artist Talk by Kindness held in Summerhall’s Anatomy Lecture Theatre, followed by a drink’s reception in the Main Hall where Kindness‘ permanent ceiling installation is located. The galleries will be open to view during this time.

Inspired by Homer’s epic, The Odyssey exhibition explores the timeless nature of Greek mythology. Using contemporary objects as substrates, Kindness expresses the continuing relevance of Greek myths to our culture. The hazards of Scylla and Charybdis are engraved onto a toilet seat, Odysseus‘s teenage son listens to albums by ‘The Sirens‘ and ‘The Gorgons‘, and Poseidon advertises expensive underwater watches. William Morris, Iris Robinson and Desperate Dan all make appearances within the exhibition.
