Shorts 2: Resistance through Storytelling (15)

Part of Manipulate Festival 2024, their animated shorts programme celebrates extraordinary animation from around the globe showcasing a dizzying range of styles, techniques, genres and ideas. The programme is co-curated with guest creatives, each looking at animation from different social and artistic perspectives.

Manipulate’s second shorts programme is curated by Manipulate Arts Associate Programmer Natasha Thembiso Ruwona, a writer, artist and researcher based between London and Scotland. The programme takes the themes of social justice and protest as its starting point. Showcasing an array of animation styles, the selected films explore various modes of storytelling through personal and collective proclamations. Through this body of work, we see the power of animated forms in challenging systems of power and shining a light in places that it can be hard to reach through live-action filmmaking. The programme explores the importance of both coming together as a community and the power of a single voice in the shaping and challenging of systems.
