strong violence, bloody images, threat

The young, volatile Ida (Rakel Lenora Flottum) moves with her parents and non-verbal sister Anna (Alva Brynsmo Ramstad) to an apartment complex in the heat of the summer.

Meeting other children in the surrounding buildings, including the disturbed Ben (Sam Ashraf), they collectively begin to possess remarkable supernatural abilities, from telepathy to the unnerving ability to influence other people’s minds…

What follows is a dread-inducing, grippingly under-the-skin genre journey; smartly unsentimental as a study of childhood, its shocking study of powers being used for abject evil sets The Innocents apart from the countless other coming-of-age and superhero films it expertly subverts.

Frequent Joachim Trier (Thelma, Oslo 31st August) collaborator Eskil Vogt delivers a knockout sophomore film as director (after his 2014 debut Blind); a disturbingly dark descent into the horrors of youth…

“Sinister and completely absorbing… I doubt I’ll see a film so successful on all levels this year” – Stephen King
