Few films have been produced in Sudan since independence in 1956, You Will Die at Twenty is the country’s eighth feature film and the first ever Sudanese film to be submitted for Best International Film at the 93rd Academy Awards. Filmmaker Amjad Abu Alala shot the film in northern Sudan during the upheavals of the Sudanese revolution and despite challenges in a country without a film industry and under the Islamist government of the time.
A young man growing up in a small Sudanese village attempts to live his life while grappling with a holy man’s prediction that he will die when he turns twenty.
