David Rushton – Berlin 1989

I was visiting Berlin when those on the Western side had started chipping away at the wall’s concrete. By November 1989 we were relatively free to travel between east and west. My photographs were taken to contrast the activity and jubilation on the Western side of the wall. There are photographs showing guards, seemingly bemused spectators looking through the wall from the East at the chiselling of the barrier behind the Reichstag. The other images show a somewhat forlorn figures monitoring visitors flowing through the checkpoint at the Brandenburg Gate.
