Andrew Sim (b.1987) has witnessed the transition from a society still bearing the scars of the AIDS epidemic and a media backlash against LGBTQ+ people, through a period of ‘integrationism’ (which saw marriage equality and increased acceptance for some) — to a new period of queer radicalism, community building, gender fluidity and a rejection of hetero/homo-normativity.

Against this backdrop Sim’s pastel drawings express the strains of a community being pulled between a forward-facing radicalism and the unresolved traumas of the past. This exhibition – Sim’s first public solo show – is a personal account of learning what it means to be a queer person in 2019.
