A diverse exhibition of Female Artists responding to the research theme of ‘Women, Art & Inequality’. With an apt title borrowed from Sarah Kane play ‘Crave’, the multi-medium works offer socio-political ‘docufiction’, autobiographical protest and provocative humour through art process and lived perspective.

Ciocarlan’s portrait photography intertwines with text engaging narratives around power imbalances and poverty, while McGregor’s sculpture crosses themes of identity, isolation and hope. Kerr’s ‘house flood’ and losing her beloved coats spurs a new beginning and its threads of meaning, while McLintock’s theatrical sculptures re-situate the failures and impacts of gender hate crimes – look out for the ‘burnt unopened letters from a deviant’. Buffam explores the multiple and often complicated roles of women artists as Majewska makes the ordinary life extraordinary with her real autobiographical-wallpapers and visual story weaving.

The exhibition challenges linear conventions in collaboration and engages in the exposure and dismantling of ongoing barriers faced by women and artists. With ethnographical discourse around the support of older artists, the rich art making celebrates and claims possibility. For many of the creatives in the exhibition this is their first access to Creative Scotland funding.
