In 2009 Mark Cousins went to N Iraq (Kurdistan) to make a magical film about children and imagination and storytelling. A film about life when the wartide is out. It was called THE FIRST MOVIE and it won a few prizes and touched a lot of people’s hearts.

Now times are tough in Iraqi Kurdistan and the wartide is in again. Ethnic minorities (Yazedis, Christians, Turkmen) are being ethnically cleansed and many innocent people are suffering. Many children are dying.

We are putting on this pop up screening to do what little we can to humanise an inhuman situation, and raise money and awareness for the people of Kurdistan. Any donations raised on the night will be sent via a new Scottish group KISS (Kurdistan Is Supported by Scotland) to a group of brilliant Swedish Kurdish doctors who are travelling in October to take medical aid and their skills to help the thousands of people sheltering at Zakho Refugee Camp in N Iraq.

The screening will be followed by a talk with two amazing people – Mark Cousins – film maker, who will speak about his relationship with Kurdistan, and Aso Fotoohi – a Kurdish refugee now living in Glasgow, founder memeber of KISS, who will speak about the need to keep this issue in the public eye, and support the Kurdish people in any way we can.

And afterwards maybe we can all adjourn to the bar and discuss ideas and ways of helping this important, extraordinary, complicated, beautiful country.

The screening is free, but we’d like to suggest donations of £10 for those who can afford it, or whatever you feel you can give.

We hope you can join us.
