Mentions of the Holocaust

To this day, it is considered the original cell of modern architecture and design – the Bauhaus. But “Bauhaus” doesn’t just mean the cubic white house with a flat roof, the tubular steel chair or the Bauhaus lamp: the Bauhaus was also a training centre that still serves as a model today.

World-famous artists from Johannes Itten and Wassily Kandinsky to Lyonel Feininger, Paul Klee, Oskar Schlemmer, Gunta Stölzl, Johannes & Anni Albers, Walter Gropius and Mies van der Rohe taught there. The film paints a picture of this unique institution of artistic modernism – from the revolutionary outbreak after the end of the First World War to the dissolution and emigration, the professional onward journey or even the involvement of some of their alumni and teacher in Nazi-Germany.

This is probably the most comprehensive critical portrayal of the artistic and political goals of the Bauhaus in a film portrait and provides insight into the essence of the Bauhaus principles, the conflicts that led to the relocation of the Bauhaus from Weimar to Dessau, the dissolution of the school during the Nazi era, the building activities in the young state of Israel and the creation of the myth of the “Bauhaus” in the USA.
