A critical discussion between three leading puppeteers in Scotland, exploring contemporary puppetry practice from the perspective of gender. We will explore issues around whose stories are told in puppetry, and what kind of gender roles appear in those stories, gender balance in programming and how women’s work is presented and critically discussed, the process of puppet-making and how we signal and codify gender in puppetry, and barriers to progression for women (cisgender, transgender, genderqueer or intersex) in the puppetry sector. We will also explore the ways in which puppetry can be a powerful tool for subversion and protest.

Speakers will include Kim Bergsagel (Edinburgh-based puppeteer, puppet maker, artist, writer, yoga teacher and co-founder of Vision Mechanics), Shona Reppe (an award-winning theatre-maker, performer, puppeteer and designer best known for her highly visual small-scale theatre shows for young audiences) and Fiona Oliver Larkin (physical theatre maker, puppeteer, circus performer, co-director of physical theatre and circus company, Voice Box Theatre, and one half of feminist theatre duo SALTYDOLLS). The event is presented as part our European collaborative puppetry project, the European Contemporary Puppetry Critical Platform, and will be hosted by Artistic Director and CEO of Puppet Animation Scotland, Dawn Taylor.

This event is Free Ticketed.
