Daisies (15)

DAISIES
Dir. Věra Chytilová
Cast: Jitka Cerhová, Ivana Karbanová
1966, 73mins, Czech with English subtitles, 15

Initially banned on its release in Czechoslovakia in 1966, Daisies is today regarded as a surrealist classic. Two girls, both named Marie, set about performing a series of riotous acts rebelling against the oppressive society that surrounds them. Defying easy categorisation, Daises exists somewhere between surrealist comedy and anarchist romp with a dose of feminist politics thrown in for good measure. Provocative, hilarious and utterly bizarre, this is a true cinematic enigma that has to be experienced to be believed.

“My favourite Czech film and one of the most exhilarating stylistic and psychedelic eruptions of the 60s…” Jonathan Rosenbaum
