The Demarco Archive 1930-2011 : Art & War

This exhibition is inspired by the history of the Edinburgh Festival since 1947, and the lives of artists such as JOSEPH BEUYS (who famously said ‘Kunst ist Kapital’ and ‘Show your wounds’ ) and TADEUSZ KANTOR, along with the practitioners of his Cricot 2 Theatre Company (two of whom, Andrzej and Teresa Welminski, directed the Rose Bruford College production of Traumatikon.)

‘I have been waiting impatiently for such a production ever since I introduced three Cricot 2 Theatre productions to the Edinburgh Festival – in 1972, ‘73 and ’76 because Traumatikon uniquely and startingly reveals Kantor’s genius.    The image of my contribution to Summerhall’s productions and exhibitions is therefore an ‘Event Photograph’ that I took of the production at Rose Bruford showing the ‘Angel of War’ overwhelming the characters; those characters defined in Kantor’s concept of ‘Café Europe’, the world of Witkiewicz, Wispianski and Schulz, between the two World Wars.’

- RICHARD DEMARCO

The exhibition,  subtitled ‘Art and War’,  relates directly to the Demarco Foundation’s exhibitions at Scotland House in Brussels ‘Scotland in Europe: Europe in Scotland’ and at Craigcrook Castle (La Biennale di Venezia del Mondo).
